What is a Root Canal?

Root Canal Treatment Process

A root canal is a dental procedure used to treat infection or damage within the pulp of a tooth. During the procedure, the endodontist removes the infected or damaged pulp, cleans the inside of the tooth, and seals it to prevent further infection. The treatment aims to save the tooth and reduce pain, allowing patients to keep their natural tooth rather than have it extracted.

Understanding Root Canal Costs

Dental Service Cost
RCT 1 Canal $944
RCT 2 Canal $1,375
RCT 3 Canal $1,608
RCT 4+ Canal $2,029

Factors That Influence Root Canal Costs

  • Number of Canals: If you need a root canal for a front tooth, you can expect a lower price because it typically involves only one canal. However, premolars may have two canals, and molars can have up to four. The more root canals involved, the higher the treatment cost. An X-ray can help determine the number of root canals in the affected tooth.
  • Condition of the Tooth: Your dentist may recommend a dental crown if your root canal-treated tooth has severe decay or a large fracture. This will likely increase the cost, depending on the type of crown you choose. Conversely, a tooth in good condition may only require a filling, which generally costs less.
  • Retreatment of a Previous Root Canal: If you have had a previous root canal and the tooth becomes reinfected, your dentist will need to remove the existing crown and clean the canal filling, if present. This additional procedure can increase your fees.
